Rise & Shout

In case you didn't know, a member of our ward (Brandon Bradley #5) is on the BYU football team. There are quite a few of us in the ward that are pretty big fans of BYU football...okay, we're borderline obsessive about it, but having Brandon in our ward, and having him be a member of the team has really magnified our love for BYU football.

For this season we decided to create a t-shirt to wear to the games to show our support for BYU football, and particularly Brandon. We are placing the order for the shirts on Friday and we wanted anyone in the ward that is interested to be able to get a shirt too.

So...if you'd like to buy a shirt please let me know how many and what size (XS - 6XL). The shirts will cost less than $5.00 (we have a good hookup for t-shirts in the ward...thank you Colin & Tyler Minor!), and they will look like this:

Again, we will be placing the order on Friday so you need to get back to me no later than Thursday night! GO COUGS!!!

Housing Requests

We all know that our ward is pretty much the best ward ever, right? It makes sense, then, that couples who have moved away for the summer are wanting to find places back in the ward.

If you know of any housing that is available we'd love to post it on the blog. We can help those that want to move back into the ward, and those of you trying to sell your contracts. Please call, email, post a comment, or text me if you have any housing information.

Thanks!

Ward Activity Reminder AND Friday Fitness Tip

Two items of business today.

First is a reminder of the ward Pool Party tomorrow from 11:00-1:00 p.m. at the Sparks II Apartments (450 North right behind Gold's Gym). And just to clarify from my previous post, itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot one pieces will be welcomed, as well as tankini's. Lest anyone was confused.

Second, is our Friday Fitness Tip. And today's tips is more of a health tip than a fitness tip. I've been doing a lot of exercising and playing outside and I hope you all realize the importance of wearing sunscreen. I was once a careless 18 year old girl going to BYU-Hawaii and thinking I was invincible. That was 12 years ago and now I'm starting to see the effects of my carelessness in the form of lines, wrinkles, and blotchy skin. Maybe those are just things that come hand-in-hand with being in my 30's now, but I know that proper skin care in my younger years could have prevented some of the aging I'm experiencing now.

So learn from my mistakes and WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN. Not only will it minimize the aging process of your skin, but you'll also avoid sunburns (which, let's be honest, are horrible!!), and more importantly skin cancer.

Enjoy the sunshine, I hear we're acutally suppose to have a lot more of it in the week to come.

Looking For A Date Idea?

Landon Wheeler is currently directing a play (her last one to be exact) called Standing Still Standing. It is a romantic comedy and it's playing right now. They have free giveaways every Friday and they have a show blog where you can go and read more. Check it out by clicking here. Good Luck Landon!

Craft Blog

Michele Deceuster has a craft blog that she started and we wanted to share the link with you. Click here to see it, or I've also added to the list on the right. This is a great blog to get ideas from and share any of your own ideas. Heaven knows I need all the crafty help I can get. Thanks Michele!

If any of you have something you'd like to share with all of us please shoot me an email and we'll add it to the list. We'd love to know what you're involved with.

Have a fantastic week!

Friday Fitness Tip

This week's fitness tip is to PUMP SOME IRON. That's right, if you want to see some serious results you've got to add weight to your workout routine. The more muscle mass you have on your body the more calories you will burn at rest.

What does that mean? It means that you have to have resistance, or weight, to build up your lean muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you'll burn while your sitting around watching "So You Think You Can Dance." Okay, that's what I sit around watching, but the point is that if you have more muscle on your body you will burn more calories at rest because it requires more energy for you body to maintain muscle than it requires to maintain fat.

Make sense? If not, just trust me that if you integrate some strength training into your workouts you will see greater and faster improvement in your overall physique. A common misconception among women is that if we lift weights we will get 'bulky' muscles. This is simply not true. As women we do not have testosterone pumping through our veins like men do. Testosterone is the hormone that facilitates 'bulky' muscles. So, have no fear. Pick up some weights...heavy weights...and start lifting. If you go too light on the weight you will not increase your muscle mass. It's got to be hard so don't cheat yourself and have fun!

A Few Items...

Okay, so I went and gave this big shpeel in RS that I was going to be more on-the-ball and keep the blog updated regularly and then went almost 2 weeks with no posts! I know, you're thinking I'm such a liar! Truth be told, our internet has not been working and that is the reason for my lack-luster blogging skeels these days.

Now onto the real items of business...

Do you know Marybeth Cornwall? She is a sister in our ward and she is amazing! If you don't know her you should get to know her because not only is she totally rad (yes, I just used the word 'rad' what can I say, I was a kid in the 80's and it was cool then and everything retro is cool, right?...I digress...), she also always has such great ideas.

Anyway, Marybeth has started a blog where you can go and share recipes. I don't know about you but I am ALWAYS looking for more things to make for dinner. We tend to have about 10 days worth of meals that we just keep rotating through. Can you say boring? The blog has just barely started and we need your recipes. If you're interested in either contributing or just getting new ideas click here. There are some rules so make sure to read the blog carefully and LET'S GET COOKIN'!!

Also, Chris & Sarah Fryer have opened a snow cone shack called Surf 'n Slurp here in Provo. Click here to visit their blog. Again, if you don't know the Fryers don't let that stop you from visiting the Surf 'n Slurp! Usually either Chris or Sarah is working at the shack, and if not one of them our own Dane Smith works there now too! Mike and I took the kids down there for some deliciousness-in-a-cup last week. You've got to go try it! It is the perfect compliment to these warm summer days.

Do you have something you want to share with the ward? Let me know and I'll post it on the blog. Just leave a comment or email me (see bottom right of page).

Friday, May 22, 2009

Yep...Still Here.

Okay...wow...I can't believe I have been such a slacker at updating the blog. I promise it won't happen again, for those of you that even care and/or pay attention.

Other than church on Sunday there are no activities happening this weekend. However, it is Memorial Day and the long awaited opening of Seven Peaks is tomorrow. HOORAY!! I love that place. And, did you know you can get a season pass with your BYU or UVSC ID for only $39 dollars?

I've also decided to do a "Friday Fitness Tip." As many of you know I teach aerobics classes at the gym and fitness is a huge part of my life. Most days it is what keeps me sane. I was out walking this morning and I was overwhelmed by the beauty of our surroundings.

My fitness tip this week is to GET OUT...outside that is...and enjoy the weather. I'm a gym rat and don't exercise outside as often as I should. There is something to be said for breathing the fresh air and taking in your surroundings. I encourage you to get out, get your heart pumping, have fun, enjoy the beauty of the earth, and enjoy the gift of health and life. I promise you'll not only feel better about yourself, but you'll feel better about life in general.

Reminders For This Weekend - March 20th

Here are some reminders for this weekend, as well as some other upcoming events.

Stake Conference - Saturday, March 21st & Sunday March 22nd:

Saturday, March 21st - Priesthood Leadership Meeting - 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Saturday Evening Session - 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.

*Both of these meetings will take place at the Stake Center in the West Chapel.

Sunday, March 22nd - Sunday General Session - 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Provo Tabernacle: 100 S. University Avenue

Girls Night Out - Thursday, March 26th 8:00 p.m. @ the Belmont Clubhouse

We will be making Oreo Truffles and watching a "chick flick." Feel free to bring any other desserts or dessert recipes to share. Also, be aware of parking as there are only a few visitor parking spots which are only good for 30 min. Your best bet is just to walk and burn off some of those Oreo Truffle calories!!!

Ward Talent Show - Friday, March 27th, 6:00 p.m. @ Wilk 5519

All talents are welcome and it's not too late to sign-up. If you have a talent either to perform or display please bring it and share it with all of us. I, for one, am not all that outwardly talented, but I can make a mean loaf of homemade bread and homemade jam so...BAM...there's my talent. If you too have something like that then bring it so I'm not the only one.

If you still don't feel like you have something to share come anyway. It's bound to be a fun night.

Book Club - Tuesday, March 31st, 7:00 p.m. @ Brittany Staley's house

The book is "Mr. Darcy's Daughters" (see picture at right) which is a sequel to Pride and Prejudiced. Everyone is raving about the book. If you need a copy contact Brittany.

Spring Forward

This is just a friendly reminder that this weekend is Daylight Savings!! That means you need to set your clocks forward 1 hour on Saturday night. Otherwise you'll be an hour late to church!!

Monday Memo...Sorta...March 4, 2009

Well, the "Monday Memo" didn't exactly make it up on Monday this week because our internet has not cooperated very well this week. Sorry to all of you that were anxiously awaiting that. :)

None-the-less, here are the activities for this week. I'm actually going to post activities through next week because I'm being induced on Sunday and, once again, the Monday Memo won't be up on Monday. I know, lame that I'm not willing to post it from my hospital room. Call me a slacker.

Here are the activities:

Wednesday, March 4th (that would be TONIGHT) -

Ward Temple Night - Provo Temple, meet in the chapel at 6:40 p.m.

Monday, March 9th -

FHE Groups. Make sure to pick up a list on Sunday so you know which FHE group you belong to. These groups are a great way to get to know others in the ward and mix-up your regular FHE activities.

Wednesday, March 11th -

Cooking with Molly @ Natalie Bergin's home. 7:00 p.m. I'm not sure what Natalie will be cooking that night, but pay attention in Relief Society to find out. Not like it matters because it's free food, and hanging out with the girls...why wouldn't you want to go?

Miscellaneous Notes:

Relief Society Lesson for this Sunday(March 8th): Joseph Smith manual, Lesson #27 "Beware the Bitter Fruits of Apostasy."

Ward Choir (March 8th): 1:30 p.m. Nantucket #4.

Relief Society Lesson (March 15th): Joseph Smith Manual, Lesson #28 "Missionary Service."

The Monday Memo - February 23, 2009

Hey Ladies!

I've decided to have "The Monday Memo" every week. This way we can have a consistent post that simply states what's happenin' for the week. Here are this week's activities:

Tuesday, February 24th -

Lemonade Ladies: 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. @ Amber Elmer's house. I'm not going to post anyone's home addresses on the blog, so if you don't know where Amber lives refer to your ward directory or call me. Or, leave a comment and I'll call you.

Book Club: 7:00 p.m. @ Brittany Staley's house. The book this month was "The Bishop's Bride" and the author (Jaime Watkins' Mother- in-law) is going to be there! Even if you didn't read the book you are still welcome to come.

Thursday, February 26th -

An "unofficial" ward activity (not sponsored by the ward, but everyone is invited): Roller Skating at Classic Skating in Orem. 7:00 p.m. and the cost is only $1.00 dollar!

Miscellaneous Reminders -

This is the last week to do your Visiting Teaching! Please try to at least call your sisters and make a visit if you can. If you don't know who you visit leave a comment and I'll call you and let you know. Also, remember to report your visiting teaching to your supervisor. Again, if you don't know who your supervisor is just "holla" and I'll let you know!

Ashley Edward's Baked French Toast Recipie

Hey Sisters!
Thanks to everyone who made it to the ward activity this morning. There were a lot of people there, a ton of great food, and some fun talents shared. We missed everyone that couldn't make it.

Some people were asking for this great recipe from Ashley Edwards, enjoy!

Baked French Toast

8 oz. pkg. breakfast sausage, browned and crumbled
16-oz. loaf raisin-cinnamon brad, cubed
6 eggs
1 1/2 c. milk
1 1/2 c. half-and-half
1 t. vanilla extract
1/4 t. nutmeg
1/2 t. cinnamon
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 c. chopped pecans
1/2 c. butter, softened
2 T. maple syrup

Place bead cubes in a 9x13-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray; top with sausage pieces. In a large mixing bowl, beat together eggs, milk, half-and-half, vanilla, nutmeg, and cinnamon; pour over bread and sausage, pressing sausage and bread into egg mixture. Cover and refrigerate 8 hours or overnight. In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, pecans, butter, and syrup; drop by teaspoonfuls over casserole. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes or until center tests done.
