Monday Memo - June 29th

Okay, I was a major slacker last week. It's summer and we are trying our best to keep busy and not spend much time inside, on the computer, or watching TV.

Here are the activities for this week:

Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 30th -

Lemonade Ladies at KIWANIS Park (note the changed location): 10:00-11:30. Come and enjoy some fun at the park.

That is the only activity this week. I hope everyone has a wonderful 4th of July!! Be safe and we'll see you on Sunday.

Ward Activity Reminder AND Friday Fitness Tip

Two items of business today.

First is a reminder of the ward Pool Party tomorrow from 11:00-1:00 p.m. at the Sparks II Apartments (450 North right behind Gold's Gym). And just to clarify from my previous post, itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot one pieces will be welcomed, as well as tankini's. Lest anyone was confused.

Second, is our Friday Fitness Tip. And today's tips is more of a health tip than a fitness tip. I've been doing a lot of exercising and playing outside and I hope you all realize the importance of wearing sunscreen. I was once a careless 18 year old girl going to BYU-Hawaii and thinking I was invincible. That was 12 years ago and now I'm starting to see the effects of my carelessness in the form of lines, wrinkles, and blotchy skin. Maybe those are just things that come hand-in-hand with being in my 30's now, but I know that proper skin care in my younger years could have prevented some of the aging I'm experiencing now.

So learn from my mistakes and WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN. Not only will it minimize the aging process of your skin, but you'll also avoid sunburns (which, let's be honest, are horrible!!), and more importantly skin cancer.

Enjoy the sunshine, I hear we're acutally suppose to have a lot more of it in the week to come.

They have free giveaways every Friday and they have a show blog where you can go and read more. Check it out by clicking here. Good Luck Landon!

This is a great blog to get ideas from and share any of your own ideas. Heaven knows I need all the crafty help I can get. Thanks Michele!

If any of you have something you'd like to share with all of us please shoot me an email and we'll add it to the list. We'd love to know what you're involved with.

Friday Fitness Tip

This week's fitness tip is to PUMP SOME IRON. That's right, if you want to see some serious results you've got to add weight to your workout routine. The more muscle mass you have on your body the more calories you will burn at rest.

What does that mean? It means that you have to have resistance, or weight, to build up your lean muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you'll burn while your sitting around watching "So You Think You Can Dance." Okay, that's what I sit around watching, but the point is that if you have more muscle on your body you will burn more calories at rest because it requires more energy for you body to maintain muscle than it requires to maintain fat.

Make sense? If not, just trust me that if you integrate some strength training into your workouts you will see greater and faster improvement in your overall physique. A common misconception among women is that if we lift weights we will get 'bulky' muscles. This is simply not true. As women we do not have testosterone pumping through our veins like men do. Testosterone is the hormone that facilitates 'bulky' muscles. So, have no fear. Pick up some weights...heavy weights...and start lifting. If you go too light on the weight you will not increase your muscle mass. It's got to be hard so don't cheat yourself and have fun!

A Few Items...

Okay, so I went and gave this big shpeel in RS that I was going to be more on-the-ball and keep the blog updated regularly and then went almost 2 weeks with no posts! I know, you're thinking I'm such a liar! Truth be told, our internet has not been working and that is the reason for my lack-luster blogging skeels these days.

Now onto the real items of business...

Do you know Marybeth Cornwall? She is a sister in our ward and she is amazing! If you don't know her you should get to know her because not only is she totally rad (yes, I just used the word 'rad' what can I say, I was a kid in the 80's and it was cool then and everything retro is cool, right?...I digress...), she also always has such great ideas.

Anyway, Marybeth has started a blog where you can go and share recipes. I don't know about you but I am ALWAYS looking for more things to make for dinner. We tend to have about 10 days worth of meals that we just keep rotating through. Can you say boring? The blog has just barely started and we need your recipes. If you're interested in either contributing or just getting new ideas click here. There are some rules so make sure to read the blog carefully and LET'S GET COOKIN'!!

Also, Chris & Sarah Fryer have opened a snow cone shack called Surf 'n Slurp here in Provo. Click here to visit their blog. Again, if you don't know the Fryers don't let that stop you from visiting the Surf 'n Slurp! Usually either Chris or Sarah is working at the shack, and if not one of them our own Dane Smith works there now too! Mike and I took the kids down there for some deliciousness-in-a-cup last week. You've got to go try it! It is the perfect compliment to these warm summer days.

Do you have something you want to share with the ward? Let me know and I'll post it on the blog. Just leave a comment or email me (see bottom right of page).
